Chateau de la Messardiere Saint Tropez Review
Connections by Avra recently had the pleasure of visiting a remarkable property with a rich history located in the breathtaking landscape of Saint-Tropez, the Chateau de la Messardière. This property dates back to the 17th century which has now been turned into an oasis for luxury travelers to discover.
The name Messardière dates back to the reign of Charles Martel, the grandfather of one of France's most iconic ruler, Charlemagne. The chateau was finished in 1904 as a wedding gift to officer and accomplished horseman Henry Brisson de la Messardière and his wife, a young artist/musician Louise Dupuy Angeac. The two French lovers had seven children and lived a regal life of horse riding while the sound of a classical piano echoed through the chateau. All was well in paradise until the sudden death of Henry, which left Louise as a widow.
Shortly after his death, the newly widowed Louise opened the chateau to high-class guests and young ladies from good families who wanted to perfect their education. Louise was a master in high society French life which served her well to keep the estate alive, but her administrative skills lacked. This forced her to sell the chateau which began a long period of several owners that ran the property into the ground more than once.
The Rebirth of the Chateau de la Messardiere
In 1989 the chateau was completely restored and expanded under the head of Historical Monuments architect, Jean-Claude Rochette. He added two extra wings facing the sea and a central swimming pool that is a highlight of this revived royal property. Now a 5 star property, the Chateau de la Messardière offers guests a one of a kind experience.
Rated as one of the top hotels in Saint-Tropez, the chateau rests on 25-acres which is located only minutes from the beach and downtown Saint-Tropez. Guests will be pleased to know that 24/7 shuttle service is available to escort guests wherever they desire. They also have a helicopter pad for those that wish to fly in style.
One of the many highlights of this property is its botanical garden that is impeccably maintained. Enjoy a quiet stroll along the botanical footpath and in the Mediterranean garden. Take in the scents of the typical Provencal flora. Chateau de la Messardière is the French Bird Protection League's (LPO) only partner-hotel, in association with Birdlife International. Château de la Messardière operates various environmental protection plans, incorporated into the hotel's daily management.
Rooms & Accommodations
The Chateau de la Messardière has 117 rooms. With such a large property but a low number of rooms, the service is at the highest level. Captured in the photo above is the horse stable that was used by the once royal family that has now been turned into suites for guests to escape in, known as the Gulf Suites. The Gulf Suites are separate from the main hotel but located only a few steps from the pool and restaurants.
Set among magnificent gardens in the wing adjacent to the hotel, this suite, measuring around 50 m², offers stunning views over the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. The suite comprises a lounge with a sofa bed and a separate bedroom with a sliding door. The bathroom is fitted with a whirlpool bath and separate shower and toilet. Terracotta floors and Provencal-style decoration.
The property has rooms in several unique locations that depending on what the guest prefers, can accommodate specific wants and needs. For example, if a guest would like to be more isolated, we would suggest staying in the Gulf Suites pictured above. If you prefer to step out of your door and be right in the action then we suggest staying in one of their beautiful poolside rooms. Maybe you prefer to be near the garden, a first-level garden room is perfect for you.
Guests are welcomed to this flowery suite (Pampelonne Suite) with champagne (or the drink of your choice), plus an assortment of home-made macaroons. The fresh fruit bowl is renewed every day, along with the selection of product samples by our Spa partner Valmont.
The housekeeper will be pleased to help you unpack your luggage when you arrive, or assist in preparing your departure. During your stay, you can specify at what time you want your room serviced, in the day or evening. Guests staying in the Pampelonne Suite also benefit from a sofa bed for a 3rd guest at no extra charge, an American-style breakfast (no extra charge for room service) and your favorite newspapers delivered to your door.
A superb view greets guests entering this suite! Set facing the magnificent Bay of Pampelonne, this spacious, 60 m² suite comprises a lounge with sofa bed, study and vast separate bedroom. You will appreciate the spacious, independent dressing room, and the guest showers and toilets set apart from your newly-decorated bathroom. In addition to 2 televisions with over 75 channels and a DVD player, guests also benefit from an iPhone/ iPad dock, plus a Nespresso coffee machine with capsules.
Pool and Spa
The pool is a highlight of the property where guests gather to relax and socialize. Here a team of staff serves guests with quality menus and a specialty cocktail list that will be sure to impress. The pool is heated at a comfortable 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit). The pool has a view over the Bay of Saint-Tropez that guests admire while lounging in one of their many lush chairs.
The Château de la Messardière prides itself on the spa experience that they offer guests. Located in the heart of the chateau, the spa is filled with natural light and is completely designed to offer guests a world that is entirely dedicated to pampering and well being. With a team that has years of experience and exceptional training, they often see returning guests rushing to schedule their appointment soon upon arrival.
When you think of France, many will think of fine cuisine. Guests at the Château de la Messardière will enjoy L'Acacia, open in the evenings only. A perfect romantic dinner that serves refined and creative Mediterranean-style cuisine in an atmosphere with a truly exceptional ambiance. The restaurant has a breathtaking terrace that overlooks the gardens and the beaches of Pampelonne. To add to the ambiance, every night live jazz music is played. A night with exceptional Mediterranean-style cuisine overlooking the Pampelonne, as smooth jazz is lightly played in the background, what's not to love!
A new vegan menu has been created that is perfectly balanced for culinary habits for both international and French guests. This is part of the campaign "Saint-Tropez Destination Veg." Head chef, Jean-Michel Le Beon works Intimately with regional producers and proposes some delicious creations. The chateau also has their own bee farm and olive trees that are grown organically to be served to guests.
